The Buddha's face is composed of broad, gently-modeled planes and a carefully-balanced arrangement of features. Heavily-lidded eyes beneath elegantly-arched brows, an elongated nose, softly-formed lips, and pendulous earlobes combine to create an expression of quiet composure. Above the high ushnisha, tightly-ordered rows of snail-shell curls provide a measured rhythmic contrast to the smooth surfaces of the face.
Founded in 1351, the Kingdom of Ayutthaya grew into one of Southeast Asia's great commercial and cultural capitals. The wealth generated through international trade supported royal and monastic patronage on an unprecedented scale, fostering workshops that produced bronze Buddhist images of notable technical and artistic refinement. This head embodies those achievements through its carefully-controlled modeling and harmonious proportions, demonstrating the confidence and sophistication that characterized Ayutthaya bronze casting.
